Cope Thunder 04-02 played out against the backdrop of 62,000-plus square miles of integrated training ranges near Elmendorf AFB, Alaska, in August. More than 1,300 participants from active duty, Air Force Reserve Command, Air National Guard, and US Navy units took part in the exercise. Four F-16 squadrons participated: the 34th Fighter Squadron from Hill AFB, Utah; the 77th FS from Shaw AFB, South Carolina; the Air National Guard's 111th FS from Ellington Field, Texas; and the 18th FS from Elmendorf. Cope Thunder is the largest multilateral air combat exercise held in the Pacific. Exercise scenarios are played out using Blue friendly forces and Red enemy forces.
