First Flights For F-35 Radar

First Flights For F-35 Radar Northrop Grumman began initial flight testing of the advanced fire-control radar for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter on 23 August. The active electronically scanned array radar was first flown on Northrop Grumman's BAC 1-11 testbed aircraft. During the flights, the all-aspect search, air-track, and synthetic-aperture radar mode capabilities were successfully evaluated against airborne and ground targets. The AN/APG-81 radar is designed to enable F-35 pilots to engage air and ground targets at long range, while also providing enhanced situational awareness. In November, the first F-35 radar was delivered to the Lockheed Martin facility in Fort Worth, Texas, where it is being installed in the JSF Mission Systems Integration Lab.
