Operation Inherent Resolve

US Central Command officials announced on 15 October 2014 that US military operations in Iraq and Syria against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant terrorists have been designated as Operation Inherent Resolve. The operation name applies retroactively to all US military actions conducted against ISIL in Iraq and Syria since airstrikes began 8 August, officials said. The name Inherent Resolve is intended to reflect the resolve and commitment of the US and partner nations to degrade and ultimately eliminate ISIL and the threat it poses to Iraq, the region, and the wider international community. According to Department of Defense reports, US and partner nations have successfully carried out approximately 450 airstrikes against ISIL targets as of 15 October.
