Dover AFB, Delaware-based C-5M Super Galaxy transports are now being used to move equipment out of expeditionary bases in Afghanistan. The C-5Ms, not normally used in tactical operations, are needed to relieve demands on the C-17 force which is being tasked for Operation Inherent Resolve and United Assistance missions. The C-5M retrograde missions began in August 2014. As of 16 October, C-5M crews have flown more than seventy sorties out of Afghanistan, carrying more than eleven million pounds of cargo, including 381 vehicles—up to five Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles at a time—and more than 460 other pieces of equipment. The heaviest load to date on a single C-5M is 280,880 pounds.
