World War II Airman Laid To Rest

The remains of US Army Air Forces 2nd Lt. Stephen V. Biezis, missing since World War II, were buried with full military honors at Arlington National Ceremonies on 14 August 2015. Biezis, assigned to the 575th Bombardment Squadron, was the copilot of a B-26C Marauder that crashed after being struck by enemy fire while on a bombing mission against enemy forces near Ahrweiler, Germany, on 23 December 1944. Several site inspections spread over several decades led to the recovery of human remains from the crash site. To identify Biezis, scientists from Department of Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency and the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory used forensic identification tools to include mitochondrial DNA, which matched his sister and cousin.
