The crew of HMAS Newcastle conducts a combined antisubmarine warfare exercise with a US P-3C Orion crew as part of Talisman Sabre 2011, a biennial US/Australian combined task force exercise designed to improve combat readiness and interoperability. The three-week exercise in July 2011 covered the spectrum of military operations from conventional conflict to peacekeeping to humanitarian assistance efforts. The recurring exercise forms part of an extensive training program that helps ensure the Australia Defence Forces are prepared to protect and support Australia and its national interests. The exercise also contributes to the ability of Australian and US military forces to work together efficiently and safely.
