On 15 June 1942, two US Army Air Forces air transport squadrons were activated, one at Drew Field, Florida, and the other at Camp Williams, Wisconsin. In May 2012, these two units, the 50th Airlift Squadron at Little Rock AFB, Arkansas, known as the Red Devils, and the 52nd AS, an active associate squadron at Peterson AFB, Colorado, known as the Fighting Roos, joined forces as the 774th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron in Afghanistan. On 15 June 2012, the squadrons celebrated their joint anniversary with ceremonies at Bagram AB. The 50th AS has flown C-130s continuously since 1957, while the 52nd was reactivated and began flying C-130s in 2009. The Fighting Roos flew C-141 StarLifter jet transports from 1988 to 1997.
