USS America (LHA-6), the US Navy's newest and most technologically advanced amphibious assault ship, was commissioned during a formal ceremony in San Francisco, California, on 11 October 2014. More than 8,000 people attended the ceremony. America is the first ship of its class and the fourth US Navy ship to bear that name. America weighs 44,971 tons, is 844 feet long, and has a beam of 106 feet. The ship is optimized for aviation and is designed to support the MV-22 Osprey and F-35B Lightning II. She was designed with additional aviation spaces and features an enlarged hangar deck, realigned and expanded aviation maintenance facilities, and increased aviation fuel capacity. Unlike other Navy amphibious assault ships, America has no well deck.
