The Royal Netherlands Air Force stood up its first F-35 Lightning II squadron in ceremonies at Eglin AFB, Florida, on 4 November 2014. During the ceremony, the flag of 323 Squadron was handed over to squadron leaders at Eglin, symbolizing transfer of command. 323 Squadron, which currently flies F-16s, will be responsible for Royal Netherlands Air Force Operational Test and Evaluation for the F-35. The first Lightning IIs are scheduled for delivery in the Netherlands starting in 2019. The Dutch military plans to order at least thirty-seven F-35As. 323 Squadron was formed in 1948 and converted to the Lockheed F-104s in 1964. The unit converted to the F-16 in 1981.
