Hill AFB, Utah, and the Salt Lake City community officially welcomed the F-35 Lightning II at a ceremony on 14 October 2015. The event marked the formal start of F-35 operations for the 388th and 419th Fighter Wings. Members of the Utah congressional delegation, Air Force and base officials, Airmen and their families, and Lockheed Martin representatives were part of the more than 500 people who attended the ceremony. The two F-35s delivered to Hill on 2 September are the first of seventy-two aircraft scheduled to arrive at the base by 2019. The active-duty 34th Fighter Squadron, known as the Rude Rams, are the first operational US Air Force unit to fly combat-coded F-35s.
