Aircrews from the 60th and 349th Air Mobility Wings at Travis AFB, California, conducted a mass launch of twenty-two mobility aircraft on 11 September 2013 to practice safely launching a large number of aircraft and as a remembrance of the 9/11 attacks. During the mass takeoff, dubbed Freedom Launch, four C-5B Galaxy, seven C-17 Globemaster III, and eleven KC-10A Extender crews departed in thirty-six minutes and twenty-one seconds on both operational and training missions. The launch also provided training for flight operations, operations support, aircraft maintenance, fuels, and air traffic control personnel. The mass launch of three types of aircraft from the active duty and Air Force Reserve Command associate units at the base was the largest ever at Travis.
