Crews flying C-130 Hercules transports equipped with the US Forest Service's Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System, or MAFFS, have released more than 332,400 gallons of retardant as of 6 July 2012. Hercules aircrews have flown 140 airdrop missions since being called into action to battle fires in the Rocky Mountain region and other western locales. Six C-130s—two each from the 153rd Airlift Wing, the Air National Guard unit from Cheyenne, Wyoming, the 146th AW, the California Guard unit at Channel Islands ANGB, and the 302nd AW, the Air Force Reserve Command unit at Peterson AFB, Colorado—are now being flown in the firefighting effort. On 5 July, C-130 crews discharged approximately 8,500 gallons of retardant near Woods Landing, Wyoming.
