The US Forest Service released the remaining two C-130s equipped with the Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System, or MAFFS, from operations on 14 September 2012, as fires in the western US had been contained. The final crews were from the 146th Airlift Wing, the California Air National Guard unit at Channel Islands ANGB, and the 145th AW, the North Carolina ANG unit at Charlotte. MAFFS crews from the 153rd AW, the Wyoming ANG unit at Cheyenne, and from the 302nd AW, the Air Force Reserve Command wing at Peterson AFB, Colorado, were released in early September. MAFFS crews dispensed almost 2.5 million gallons of retardant—the second highest total ever—during 1,011 drops on fires in ten states since June.
