Royal Canadian Air Force aircraft and fighter, tanker, and transport crews departed Canada on 23 October 2014, headed to Southwest Asia in support of Operation Impact, the Canadian contribution to coalition assistance to security forces in Iraq fighting against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, or ISIL. Crews flying two CP-140M Aurora long range patrol aircraft departed 14 Wing Greenwood, Nova Scotia, on 24 October. The CP-140s, the RCAF version of the P-3 Orion, will be used for overland surveillance and reconnaissance missions. Approximately 600 Canadian personnel, including aircrew members and support elements such as command and control and logistics personnel, deployed.
