The first F-35A Lightning II for the US Air Force Weapons School at Nellis AFB, Nevada, was ferried from the Lockheed Martin facility in Fort Worth, Texas, on 15 January 2015. Capt. Brent Golden, an instructor with the 16th Weapons Squadron flew the aircraft (US Air Force serial number 12-5049) to Nellis. The Weapons School's first F-35 will be used to drive tactics development. The School's immediate goal is to create the curriculum for the first F-35 course. This first and subsequent Weapons School-assigned F-35s will initially operate under the umbrella of the 16th Weapons Squadron, the school's F-16 squadron. The first F-35A Weapons School student course is tentatively scheduled to start in January 2018.
