US Air Force officials announced on 26 April 2014 that half of the 439th Airlift Wing's C-5 fleet at Westover ARB, Massachusetts will be cut as a result of Pentagon budget decisions. The host 439th Airlift Wing currently flies sixteen C-5B models and eight of those aircraft will be transferred from Westover to JB San Antonio-Lackland, Texas, starting in 2015. As part of this decision, Westover will receive eight upgraded C-5M Super Galaxys. Personnel losses at Westover are expected to include fifty-nine full-time enlisted and 275 drilling Reservists, although that number has not been finalized. Drilling reservists are Airmen who attend monthly unit training assemblies, while the full-time Air Reserve Technicians are civil service employees.
