The 167th Airlift Squadron, the West Virginia Air National Guard unit at Shepherd Field in Martinsburg, West Virginia, carried out its last C-5A Galaxy training mission on 25 September 2014. The 167th AS received its first of eleven C-5As on 4 December 2006, and launched its first mission with the Galaxy on 28 March 2007. Since 2007, the unit has accumulated more than 20,000 flying hours on the C-5 with more than 4,500 sorties. Crews have hauled more than 53,000 short tons of cargo and more than 34,000 passengers. Six C-5s remain at the base, but those aircraft are scheduled for retirement by May 2015. The Martinsburg transports are the last C-5s in the Air National Guard.
