Aerial firefighting crews from the 146th Airlift Wing, the California Air National Guard C-130J unit at Channel Islands ANGB and the 302nd Airllift Wing, the Air Force Reserve Command C-130H unit at Peterson AFB, Colorado, returned to their home bases on 6 May 2011 after nearly three weeks of deployed operations at Dyess AFB, Texas. The four C-130s, two from each unit, were flown on eighty-one sorties during the operation and dropped 243,000 gallons of fire retardant over the wildfires burning in south and west Texas. The C-130s were equipped with the Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System 2 equipment, which can discharge 3,000 gallons of water or fire retardant in less than five seconds.
