As part of the US Defense Department’s 2005 Base Realignment and Closure, or BRAC, action, the 118th Airlift Wing, the Tennessee Air National Guard unit at Nashville International Airport, transferred the first of four C-130H Hercules transports to the 144th Airlift Squadron, the Alaska Air National Guard unit at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, on 24 March 2011. The 144th AS is going from an eight aircraft squadron to a twelve aircraft squadron in order to accommodate the recently reactivated 537th Airlift Squadron, the active duty associate unit at Elmendorf. The other three Tennessee aircraft will be transferred to Alaska by September.
