Four seriously wounded fighters injured in the Libyan uprising against dictator Moammar Gadhafi were evacuated from Tripoli and transported to Ramstein AB, Germany, on 29 October 2011. At the request of the State Department, US Africa Command was directed by the Secretary of Defense to support a humanitarian relief effort in Libya by transporting more than thirty wounded Libyans to medical facilities in Europe and the United States. The fighters were cared for in flight by a critical care air transport team from Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany and a seven-person team from the 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron on board a 37th Airlift Squadron C-130J Super Hercules. Both the 86th AES and the 37th AS are based at Ramstein.
