A C 130J Super Hercules crew from the 146th Airlift Wing, the California Air National Guard unit at Channel Islands ANGS, conducts flare training off the Ventura County coast on 10 January 2012. The flares are countermeasures dispensed to confuse and redirect heat-seeking missiles when the crew is under attack. The flares, which burn at high temperatures, can be dispensed singly or in groups.
