Two more C-130 units equipped with the Modular Airborne Firefighting System, or MAFFS, were activated on 28 June 2012. The four additional MAFFS aircraft, two C-130Hs from the 145th Airlift Wing, the North Carolina Air National Guard unit in Charlotte, and two C-130Js from the 146th AW, the California ANG unit at Channel Islands ANGB, will be flown to Peterson AFB, Colorado, to join the four MAFFs aircraft already fighting fires in Colorado. This will mark the first time since 2008 that the eight MAFFS-equipped C-130s have been activated at the same time. The C-130s will initially operate from Peterson, but the US Forest Service, which owns the MAFFS units, may choose to base the C-130s in other operating areas.
